Hope Woods Conservation Initiative

The Hope Woods Conservation Initiative seeks to raise $1.4 million to create a permanent sanctuary of tranquility and natural beauty in the heart of Downtown Kennebunk, where residents and visitors alike can seek peace and enjoyment on lands linked to our past.

Why a Conservation Easement?

Hope Woods belongs to Hope Cemetery, which must find new ways to fund cemetery operations and maintenance, placing the future of Hope Woods in jeopardy. By selling a conservation easement, Hope Cemetery will secure funds needed to care for Hope Cemetery while also preventing future development, protecting wildlife habitats, and ensuring non-motorized public access to Hope Woods forever. After the sale of the Conservation Easement, Hope Cemetery will continue to own Hope Woods with the Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods acting as the Woods caretaker.

What is a Conservation Easement?

A conservation easement is a legally binding agreement between a landowner and either a land trust or government entity that limits what can occur on a specified piece of property. Easements are a legal way for landowners to retain ownership and use of their property, while benefiting from the sale of distinct components of their property’s value.
